Located in the eastern part of Carteret County, "Downeast" welcomes you to a more tranquil and simpler style of life set amidst its undeveloped coastal natural beauty of inlets, bays, marshes, canals, woodlands, wildlife, and pristine beaches. Most of the communities date back to pre-Colonial or early Colonial times. Fishing, boat building and farming are still traditional occupations. Many local artists also make "Downeast" their home. "Downeast" spans a 35-mile stretch along Highway 70 East from North River Bridge all the way to Cedar Island. Among the area's many pleasures are saltwater fishing, boating, hunting, camping, gardening, and horseback riding along the water's edge. "Downeast" features the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum on Harkers Island, as well as ferry services from Harkers Island to the Cape Lookout National Seashore and Lighthouse. Built in 1859, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, which is still functioning today, can be seen in the distance from many of the "Downeast" communities. In the northern part of "Downeast," the Cedar Island Ferry runs to Ocracoke Island.
